چکیده

Cationic surfactant-mediated systems containing different concentrations of cetylpyridinium chloride have been used as mobile phases in thin-layer chromatographic separation of metal cations on silica layers. The effect of surfactant concentrations below and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) on the retention behaviour of metal ions was examined. The best TLC system for rapid mutual separation of Zn, Cd, and Hg was unmodified silica as stationary phase and 5% aqueous cetylpyridinium chloride as mobile phase. The effects of pH (acidity or basicity), inorganic electrolytes (the acetate, formate, chloride, bromide, and carbonate of sodium and the chloride and nitrate of calcium), and organic compounds (urea) in the cetylpyridinium chloride solution on the mobility and separation efficiency of Zn, Cd, and Hg were assessed. The limits of detection for these metal cations were also determined. The method is well suited to identification and separation of Hg, Zn, and Cd from synthetically prepared ores, for example cinnabar (HgS), zinc blende (ZnS), and greenoekite (CdS), and from hydroxide sludge.

Micelle Mediated Preconcentration of Mercury in pH Controlled Mode for Trace Analysis

A micell-mediated phase separation method for preconcentration of ultra-trace quantities of mercury as a prior step to its determination by UV-Vis spectrophotometry has been developed. The method is based on Hg(II)-dithizone complex formation in alkaline aqueous solution, and extraction of this Hg(II)-dithizone secondary complex into the surfactant-rich phase of the non-ionic surfactant oct...

Selective and Efficient Solvent Extraction of Copper(II) Ions from Chloride Solutions by Oxime Extractants

Oxime extractants 3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methyl benzaldehyde oxime (HL1) and 3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methoxy benzaldehyde oxime (HL2) were synthesized and characterized by conventional spectroscopic methods. Suitable lipophilic nature of the prepared extractants allowed examining the ability of these molecules for extr...

Simultaneous derivative spectrophotometric determination of zinc and cadmium with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride.

A selective and sensitive derivative photometric method has been developed for the determination of trace amounts of Zn2+ with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride, a cationic surfactant. The molar-absorption coefficient and analytical sensitivity of the 1:2 complex at 554 nm are 1.19 x 10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.56 ng mL(-1), respectively....

Surfactant gel adsorption of platinum(II), (IV) and palladium(II) as chloro-complexes and kinetic separation of palladium from platinum using EDTA.

A micellar solution of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) can separate into two phases due to a temperature change or to the addition of salts. Platinum(II), (IV) and palladium(II) reacted with chloride ions to form stable anionic complexes of PtCl4(2-), PtCl6(2-) and PdCl4(2-), respectively, and were adsorbed onto the CPC gel phase. The CPC phase plays the role of an ion-exchange adsorbent for the...

Solvent extraction and stripping of zinc from synthetic chloride solution in presence of manganese and cadmium as impurities

In this research work, solvent extraction and stripping of zinc ions from a Zn-Mn-Cd-bearing solution was investigated using D2EHPA as the extractant in a chloride medium. The efficiency of the extraction and stripping stages was evaluated separately, and different parameters such as the pH, extractant concentration, reaction temperature, and contact time were studied. Based on the results obta...
